The Wagner Group’s Earth Friendly Concrete has been used in a big way by GPT Group at a new warehouse development in Wacol, Queensland.
GPT primary contractor De Luca Corporation poured the 38,000 square metres of the Earth Friendly Concrete (EFC) for two warehouses, two office buildings and external hardstands.
The use of Wagners’ EFC saved more than 60 tonnes of embodied carbon emissions compared to traditional concrete, through the absence of cement and the use of recycled materials.
GPT head of development and logistics Darren Hunt said sustainable building materials were imperative to the company’s operations.
“We want to create value for our investors by creating high quality facilities in a sustainable way,” Hunt said.
“Our sustainability performance is driven by a culture of raising the bar, we act when it comes to reducing pollution and consumption of non-renewable materials.”
The absence of cement reduces the embodied carbon emissions associated with the binder content of conventional concrete by up to 90 per cent without the need for offsets.
The building material company says its EFC has many advantages including durability, lower shrinkage, higher tensile strength and increased fire resistance compared with traditional concrete.
Wagners EFC general manager Jason Zafiriadis said this significant project put the product on display in a big way.
“We are reducing the carbon footprint in the construction industry by providing a concrete that has genuine environmental benefits,” Zafiriadis said.
“This project is a great example of how Earth Friendly Concrete can be used for large scale projects to save significant amounts of embodied carbon while also participating in the circular economy, making use of a large volume of industrial waste that would otherwise be destined for landfill.”
De Luca site manager Ihor Drohomyretskyy said Wagner’s EFC was a no-brainer, being a one-of-a-kind product in sustainable building materials.
“One of De Luca’s’ core values is to be sustainable in our practices and for this project it was specified that sustainability was a very high priority,” Drohomyretskyy said.
“That is why we are using building materials with significantly reduced embodied carbon like Earth Friendly Concrete.
“It is the only cement free product on the market, and it saves 250kg of CO2 for every cubic metre poured.”
