Wagners has satisfied another Queensland customer with its Earth Friendly Concrete product, saving the same amount of embodied carbon as the average home consumes in four years.
Thirsdon Construction was contracted to renovate a residential project in Toowong, Brisbane and required 117m3 of Earth Friendly Concrete (EFC) for footings, block fill and structural sections.
As the EFC reduces embodied carbon by about 70 per cent – saving 250kg of carbon per cubic metre poured – it was the necessary solution for the eco-minded construction business.
Thirsdon Construction director David James said finding the right sustainable materials for the job was important to the company and its client.
“We believe sustainability is very important and that is why we used Wagners’ EFC on this project. It is one of the only products on the market not to use cement, which drastically reduces embodied carbon,” James said.
The use of Wagner’s EFC has grown immensely over the past 12 months. In August last year, the concrete was displayed at the Australian Museum’s Spark exhibition to advocate for positive solutions to the climate crisis.
In September it was used to build 15 houses in Queensland’s Darling Downs region, and in November, De Luca Corporation poured 38,000m2 of EFC for the foundations of two warehouses, two office buildings and external hardstands.
Wagners EFC general manager Jason Zafiriadis said he was proud to see the product being applied in a range of construction projects, big and small.
“The construction sector is a significant emitter of carbon, and we need to look at low-carbon alternatives to traditional building materials,” he said.
“It is great to see our technically superior product used for residential projects, delivering sustainable alternatives for builders and their clients. It is another great example of how our EFC technology can be used to create a more sustainable future.”
