Major road works in or close to the Gympie region, combined with the presence of millions of tonnes of accessible, high quality rock just north of Gympie have attracted the operations to the region. The two quarries could create more than 50 new local jobs.
Wagners’ spokesman John Hunt said his company’s proposed quarry at Hermans Road, Gunalda, would generate between 25 and 30 jobs and contained enough high quality rock to last more than a century. The site is good as it is secluded, surrounded by hills and has direct access to the Bruce Highway.
“The market for the materials extracted from the quarry will be in the Gympie region and surrounding regions,” Hunt said.
Toowoomba-based Wagners, founded by brothers John, Denis, Neill, Joe and father Henry, has a long tradition in concrete, quarry and transport enterprises.
Hy-Tec proposes to establish a similar quarry at Lindley Lane, Curra and is a supplier of premixed concrete, aggregates and sands to the commercial, industrial, civil and residential construction sectors.
It supplies more than one million cubic metres of premixed concrete a year for precast, civil, industrial, commercial high-rise, residential, pools and decorative projects.
Development applications for the new quarries at Gunalda and Curra will be submitted to the Gympie Regional Council.
A community information day has been held at Curra and another is planned at Gunalda.
