Victorian quarries in the state’s southeast are being urged to prepare for inspections from Resources Victoria’s Earth Resources Regulator.

The Earth Resources Regulator is continuing its ongoing initiative into operation. This has included past inspections being carried out in the state’s west and northwest earlier this year.

As part of the next phase, the regulator will carry out inspection in quarries and mines around Omeo, Orborst, Bairnsdale and Cann River between June 10-13.

“Mines and quarries in Victoria’s far east should expect a visit from the regulator very soon,” Resources Victoria acting chief inspector Rebecca Carlton said.

“To prepare for an inspection, operators should understand the work that they are permitted to undertake at their site.”

The information gathered about how risk management in quarries and mines will be used in future audits and inspections. The key areas being assessed include boundaries and extraction limits, dust and noise management and other key areas.

Past inspections have identified inadequate fuel management, poor waste storage and a lack of boundary markers at certain sites. The regulator will work with operators to rectify any unmanaged or poorly managed risk.

Carlton said understanding and appropriately managing site risk is a key requirement.

“Appropriately managing operational risk at a mine or quarry is crucial to protecting nearby communities, infrastructure and the environment,” she said.
