Tasmania’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has approved the development of a hard rock quarry west of Launceston, with a proposed production rate of 32,000 tonnes per annum.

Walters Contracting assigned a third party to work with the EPA through the Meander Valley Council and come to an agreement as to the conditions of approval for the Porters Bridge Road Quarry.

Walters Contracting project manager Doug Tangney said he was confident in the proposal being signed off.

“We always thought we had a good project in a good area, and we were comfortable in working with the EPA through any concerns they had,” Tangney told Quarry.

“The EPA was good to work with and they understood what we wanted. All we had to do was meet their expectations.”

The company has serviced the Meander Valley community for more than 50 years and has grown to offer a range of services including earthworks, dam building, road base, landscaping materials, and mobile crushing, screening and quarrying.

These are made possible by the company’s existing Nook Quarry and a landscape and gravel yard, also in northern Tasmania.

Tangney said the company’s workforce and customer base had every chance of expanding with the council’s pending approval of the Porters Bridge Road Quarry.

“It’s likely to secure a role for everyone we have at the moment and as the quarry develops out of its initial stages post-approval there will definitely be opportunities for further employment,” he said.

Tangney said he expected the council’s decision in February, after which time first developments will be able to occur.
