As states enforce stricter prevention measures for COVID-19, the IQA has backed a directive that South Australian quarries submit management plans for the virus.

In an update on 4 April, Dr Paul Heithersay, the chief executive of the South Australian Department of Energy and Mining (DEM) suggested that  “ALL companies operating in the mining, quarrying, oil, gas and energy sectors” across SA should submit COVID-19 (coronavirus) management plans to SA Health.

This follows the strict limitations on fly-in, fly-out and drive-in, drive-out restrictions to essential staff only across the state.

According to the DEM, COVID-19 management plans are required to include detailed strategies for transmission prevention control, evidence that the measures have been used to limit essential worker travel only and preparation that would support isolation and contact tracing.

The plans should be submitted to SA Health via email: angela.lee@sa.gov.au

IQA President Shane Braddy told Quarry it was important that quarries abide by the DEM’s advice – and that quarries across Australia follow similar advice from the respective earth resources departments in their states and territories.

“It is vital the quarrying industry is able to continue operations during COVID-19 restrictions,” he said. “This is only possible if the industry continues to provide a safe environment for workers and stakeholders by implementing the correct safety practices pertaining to COVID-19.

“We will support the industry to implement all required measures for reducing the risk of COVID-19. This includes working with all regulators on supporting industry to comply with requirements to address the issue.”

To assist with management plans and prevent further spread of the virus, the IQA has released a number of COVID-19 fact sheets on its website, encouraging health and hygiene messages to be integrated into existing meetings, tool box talks and education programs.
