Resources Victoria will continue to assess operational risk management in the far east of Victoria during November.
The regulator is expected to visit quarries and mines around Cann River, Swifts Creek, Orbost and sites north of Lakes Entrance.
“During November, sites in the state’s far east will be reminded of their responsibilities to manage risks and deliver the commitments in their work plans,” Resources Victoria chief inspector Renee Palmer said.
The upcoming visits follow a series of inspections by the regulator of Victorian-based quarries and mines throughout the year. In June, the regulator visited sites around Omeo, Bairnsdale, Cann River and Orbost. The previous visits identified issues including inadequate signage, inappropriate fuel management, unsecured gates and fencing, derelict equipment and poor waste storage practices.
The inspection program is part of a wider initiative to ensure licensees and work authority holders are being compliant with their requirements and managing risks on site.
“Appropriately managing risk is part of operating a mine or quarry under Victorian law and is crucial to protecting nearby communities, infrastructure and the environment,” Palmer said.
“Operators will be required to address any risks that are being inappropriately managed.”
