The Manningham Council has confirmed it is investigating the next steps to rehabilitate the site of the former Doncaster Quarry.
Earlier this year, the council opened an expressions of interest process to see how the former quarry site could be developed. It was the first site to be looked at for development under the council’s “Strategic Property Portfolio initiative”.
However, the council has now shifted its focus for the site after initial investigations.
“Our focus for the former Doncaster quarry site has shifted to rehabilitating the land site to support potential further development,” said Andrew Day, chief executive officer of Manningham Council.
“We only get one opportunity to determine the future of this site, and we want to ensure the best financial return for the community. Once we understand what is required to rehabilitate the site, we will be in a better position to assess its potential.”
According to the council, due to issues with the quarry site, the financial returns from any proposed development was impacted. This created a situation where the expressions of interest the council received were not feasible.
The council has said the issues relate to the fill, compaction, water and slope which will mean it needs to be rehabilitated before any potential development.
The council is undertaking investigations to determine what extent of remediation is required for future development. The findings will be presented to the council by the middle of next year.
