Lismore City Council have given the green light to Monaltrie quarry becoming operational again subject to several conditions being met.
The council met to debate the issue at its October meeting, with the council’s officers recommending a refusal.
But more than an hour of discussion later from public speakers and councillors saw the councillors vote to allow the quarry’s request.
According to reports, the quarry ceased operations in 2021 despite owner Mick Santin trying to get a 16-year extension over the line.
The council engaged independent experts to look at the quarry’s case while five public speakers were heard by the councillors.
The approval, subject to 44 conditions, will see the quarry extend its life to 2036 if it can meet the conditions imposed by the council.
“The Monaltrie quarry was up for approval for an amendment to its (development application),” mayor Steve Krieg said after the meeting.
“That approval was granted by councillors with many conditions, I think 44 in total, for that quarry to start operating again after what has been quite a lengthy process to get to where we are today.
“So that DA was approved subject to meeting those conditions.”
