Building materials company Holcim has confirmed the successful launch of CaptureLab, which it says is the first industrial-scale carbon capture test platform in the industry.
Developed in Switzerland and France by the company’s research and development team, CaptureLab is designed to enable manufacturers, startups, and researchers to test and analyse carbon capture technologies, which can become integral to cement manufacturing.
The first pilot project will be performed by Air Liquide, a French gases and technologies services company.
Holcim head of group operational excellence Ram Muthu said the achievement is a testament to the hard work of the company.
“With CaptureLab, Holcim has built a unique facility to test and scale the most advanced carbon capture technologies through an agile, open innovation model with our valued partners,” Muthu said.
“Validated technologies will be used at Holcim’s own sites, advancing our industry-shaping decarbonisation roadmap and contributing to the production of near-zero cement.”
According to Holcim, the CaptureLab can analyse and process real-world emission such as nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water and trace impurities all from the cement industry. The platform features a plug-and-play design to accommodate different carbon capture systems and can be connected to Holcim’s Martres-Tolosane plant.
CaptureLab will allow Holcim’s partners to test and validate current or next-generation technologies – such as cryogenic treatment, chemical absorption, physical adsorption, membrane separation, or biological processes – in real-world conditions and at scale.
