Holcim UK has made a major investment to improve operations at its Torr Works ‘super-quarry’ in Somerset.
Following a significant financial investment, a new uphill conveyor system has been installed at the Torr Works quarry, which handles circa 5.5 million tonnes annually.
“We are delighted with the investment in the new conveyor system at Torr Works, which will be pivotal for ensuring that we can continue extracting rock both sustainably and efficiently, delivering the products for our customers at the rate that they demand it,” Torr Quarry works manager Ashley Lockyer said.
The installation of the 250m conveyor system has enabled the relocation of the primary mobile crusher and the continued extraction of limestone from a lower bench of the quarry floor. According to Holcim UK, the primary crusher has been in operation for around four decades.
The conveyor will be integral to moving up to 2,000 tonnes per hour of stone that is processed every hour from the new working floor to the processing facility on the far side of the Torr Works quarry. From there, it can be easily dispatched to customers via lorries or rail.
“The only way we could deliver such a big project was with the help of the wider Holcim group, which supported us with the funding. The actual implementation of the system, however, has been overseen by our team on the ground, who have worked tirelessly to make this innovation a reality,” Holcim regional director for south west aggregates James Pike said.
“Torr is such an important quarry for all of Holcim, and we play an integral multidisciplinary role within the business. Making sure we have the right people on site, from project manager to operators, was vital for ensuring that we could deliver this project on time.”
