Heavy-duty mobile trommel solves a difficult application

By its very nature, the handling of this rock, anything from one metre down, is brutal.

It is hard on workers and even harder on equipment. Over the years many companies have built and supplied this type of equipment with varying degrees of success.

After more than a decade of observing and examining various operations, Screenmasters Australia has arrived at the right bespoke solution and purchased a new MDS M515 track-mounted rock trommel. While this unit will not satisfy some larger operators around the country, it will provide them with a tool for “proof of concept” trials before they commit to their own bespoke design and solution.

{{image2-a:r-w:200}}Screenmasters decided on this unit after observing similar units at work in the UK, America and France, in a variety of applications including steel slag, concrete recycling and granite. This very mobile track-mounted unit comes with a standard 5.5m long barrel, which is 1.5m in diameter and weighs 50 tonnes. MDS recently supplied a track-mounted unit to the UK fitted with an 8m long barrel that was 2m in diameter, with the unit weighing more than 150 tonnes.

Screenmasters has changed the design of the M515 trommel to suit Australian conditions. The altered design features an engine pack that allows for the hotter climate. Rip-stop belts come as standard on every conveyor, and a swivel boom conveyor has been placed at the rear of the machine for the finer fractions, providing more height and stockpiling capacity. The hopper and hopper floor have been significantly reinforced.

PARTS REPLACEMENT

The beating heart of this machine and the area that comes under most scrutiny is the trommel drum itself. This is where Screenmasters has introduced the biggest change. Rather than have one single trommel drum producing 150mm minus to 300mm minus and 300mm to a nominal 600mm, Screenmasters has built the trommel drum in sections (see Figure 1) so if any section of the drum is damaged or wears more than the others, sections can be removed and replaced with ease and speed. The culpable section can be worked on off-site, and processing can continue. In turn, costs and downtime are kept to a minimum. A single drum can also be provided, as machines are bespoke built to the customer’s specific requirements.

Both Screenmasters and MDS recognise that many companies will require static solutions to their problems. To that end, static trommels are available and come with minimal requirements for any on-site civil work. The units are supplied in a modular format and come complete with their own free-standing frame. The trommel drum is then placed on top of the frame, bolted down and is ready for work within four to six hours of arriving on-site.
