The South Australian Government is backing a Hallett Group Pty Ltd (Hallett Group) project to turn Port Augusta into a national hub for the green cement industry.
Hallett Group chief executive officer Kane Salisbury said that the company is grateful to both State and Federal Governments for the support of its Green Cement Transformation project.
“The loan announced by Premier Malinauskas today will ensure that Hallett accelerates the delivery of this large-scale project to meet the rapidly growing demand for low carbon cement materials for the South Australian mining and construction industries,” Salisbury said.
“Hallett have worked diligently for 10 years to develop solutions to challenging problems, and we are delighted to now implement world-leading technology that provides a great product for our customers and great outcomes for our community and the environment.”
The State Government will provide the company with a $12 million loan to help it progress the $200 million Green Cement Transformation project, which aims to repurpose the site of the former Northern Power Station into a hub for low-carbon economic transition.
When completed, the project will have developed two infrastructure hubs at Port Augusta and Port Adelaide, turning waste by-products into green cement.
South Australia premier Peter Malinauskas said that the project is “paving the way for huge opportunities” in the state.
“It (Green Cement Transformation) will help South Australia meet its booming demand for building products used in homes, businesses, and industry, while providing sovereign capability and supply chain resilience,” Malinauskas said.
“South Australia is building, and the state needs to produce the materials to keep up the pace. This project will help realise that ambition, while reaffirming the Upper Spencer Gulf’s long-term prospects as a hub for energy and industry.”
The project adds to an estimated $2.5 billion in capital investment in energy-related projects completed and in the pipeline for Port Augusta and the Upper Spencer Gulf since 2016, according to the SA Government. Around 150 jobs are estimated during the project’s construction phase, and 50 ongoing jobs are expected.
The Federal Labor Government has contributed a grant of $20 million to the project, and it is expected to begin within the next months of 2026.
