Geelong has opened its Clean Economy Awards to help support sustainable building initiatives.
The annual awards challenge Geelong businesses to create clean technology or circular economy solutions and take them into production.
Key focus areas include concepts that would reduce energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and innovate sustainable building materials.
“As a region known for advanced manufacturing, we want to support businesses to develop innovative technology and solutions that contribute to a cleaner and stronger region,” Mayor Trent Sullivan said.
Austeng and Deakin University last year received grant funding to create a sustainable alternative to cement-based concrete. Fulton Hogan used its grant to test the viability of using locally sourced biochar (from agricultural and organic sites) in cold-mix asphalt products.
The council expects to fund up to five projects from the total pool of $50,000, from those that reduce waste to landfill, improve soil ecology, achieve net zero emissions and everything in between.
“Council is excited to continue support of clean technology and a move towards a circular economy where the impacts of production and consumption were reduced,” Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken said.
“We want to see proposed projects that are good for both the environment and the local economy and solve a problem.”
See the eligibility guidelines for a Clean Economy Grant and apply before 5pm on November 20.
