Fulton Hogan has been confirmed as the preferred contractor to deliver a major runway upgrade in Whyalla, South Australia.
Whyalla City Council secured more than $30 million in funding from the South Australian ($13.8 million) and Federal Governments ($16.2 million) for the project. The works will enable the runway at Whyalla’s airport to accommodate larger aircraft.
The project is estimated to require a workforce of more than 120 people, including around 40 workers from the local job market for subcontractor labour roles such as truck drivers and electricians.
“Fulton Hogan is proud to deliver this project for one of the most important regional airports in South Australia,” Fulton Hogan general manager for airports and defence Michael Thompson said.
“This critical investment will continue to boost the regional economy and support local businesses, including purchasing 90 per cent of the construction material locally and ensuring direct employees stay and spend in Whyalla during the project.”
The Whyalla City Council is providing $2.4 million to the project, which it says is one of the biggest projects it has ever delivered. Whyalla City Council mayor Phill Stone said the project would have a positive impact on the region.
“This shows the power of behind-the-scenes collaboration between local, state and federal government to achieve fantastic outcomes for our community,” he said.
“Both governments have recognised Whyalla as one of the most critical cities to the nation’s success through its steelmaking capability and renewable energy potential, as well as having an airport of strategic importance to the entire state.”
