Institute of Quarrying Australia (IQA) president Michael Close shares how the organisation is supporting the sector’s ongoing growth and education through new initiatives.
As we reflect on the first quarter of 2025, I’m encouraged by the strong engagement across our IQA community. While continuing education and professional development remain central to our mission, it’s the connections between professionals that truly define our organisation’s value.
Knowledge sharing across generations
I’ve been particularly heartened by the cross-generational knowledge sharing happening at branch events nationwide.
These interactions reflect exactly what we hope to formalise through our upcoming mentoring program – creating structured opportunities for experienced quarrying professionals to guide emerging talent while promoting innovation and fresh perspectives.
Strategic growth and education
The success of our strategic growth webinar series demonstrates the appetite for targeted business acumen within our community. The 29 April session on succession planning addresses a critical need for many quarry businesses considering their long-term future.
Our education offerings continue to evolve. Beyond technical training, we’re expanding into important areas like mental health and contractor safety management. These additions acknowledge that today’s quarry professionals need diverse skills beyond operational expertise. Keep an eye out for upcoming education and professional development initiatives.
Investing in our future workforce
As we look toward innovative ways to attract talent, we are working on developing a school workforce program that represents investment in the sector’s future.
By introducing quarrying careers to students, we’re addressing the long-term workforce sustainability challenge while showcasing the sophisticated technology and environmental stewardship that defines modern quarrying.
Digital transformation
Work continues on our digital transformation, with significant progress on the new website and member app.
These tools will fundamentally change how members interact with the IQA, creating more personalised and accessible experiences. The digital shift is about meeting members where they are and providing resources that integrate seamlessly into busy professional lives.
Safety and health focus
Our upcoming Safety and Health Conferences in Queensland, North Queensland, the NSW Hunter Valley and WA will showcase our commitment to safety innovation.
These events go beyond theoretical discussions to provide practical solutions that can be implemented immediately, reflecting our focus on real-world impact.
I continue to be impressed by the dedication and expertise across our membership.
Together, we’re not just responding to sector challenges – we’re anticipating them and developing forward-thinking solutions that will secure our sector’s vital place in Australia’s future.
