Slate pits recommended for world heritage status

Penryhn Quarry is one of the few active slate quarries in Wales today.

The remnants of the Chatsbury slate quarry in Goulburn, NSW, today. It was not just slate itself – but the entire Welsh slate industry – which was exported around the world. Welsh miners worked on the Chatsbury site.

Slate is a prominent feature of the Millennium Centre in the Welsh capital of Cardiff.

Today, rock climbers, hikers, divers and runners are the denizens of the old Welsh slate quarries.
