Last chance to make your mark on the 2017 annual awards!

The IQA, together with industry supporters, presents a number of annual awards to people who have distinguished themselves through educational accomplishments or their work in the quarrying industry.

The awards will be presented at our national conference in Toowoomba from 4 to 6 October, 2017.

This is a great opportunity for IQA members to highlight individuals, organisations, achievements and/or projects that promote best practice in the industry. All too often, too few of these are rightly and readily acknowledged.

There are eight Institute and sponsored awards available:

  • The Gold Hard Hat Award – to recognise a site’s contribution to the advancement of occupational health and safety (OHS) in the quarry industry. The contribution can be a single suggestion,  invention or implementation relating to equipment, processes, training, safety management, industry representation or continued excellent performance that improves OHS in the industry. The successful site will receive a framed certificate and an engraved, gold-plated hard hat.
  • The President’s Medal – to recognise an IQA member who has given outstanding service to the Institute and/or the industry.
  • AIQEF Alex Northover Training Award – for the best portfolio of evidence submitted to a registered training organisation. The top four entrants will receive registrations for the conference, with the winner to receive $2500.
  • Groundwork Plus Gold Environment Award – to recognise a site’s contribution towards the advancement of environmental management in the industry. The contribution can be for exceptional quarry rehabilitation or a new work process or method of pollution control, or for a longer-term contribution. The winner will receive a framed certificate and an engraved, gold-plated sprig of eucalypt leaves.
  • Trimble Excellence in Innovation Award – to recognise an individual’s contribution to excellence and innovation in the quarry industry. The contribution can be for innovation in design, production, operations, automation, plant design, maintenance or processes as a single event or for a longer-term contribution. The prize is a framed certificate and gold-plated trophy.
  • Metso Quarry Manager of the Year (10 or less FTE) – to recognise an individual quarry manager, where there are less than 10 FTE workers on-site, with demonstrable outstanding achievements within the quarrying industry. The successful manager will receive a framed certificate, plus a $3000 contribution to a professional development opportunity.
  • Metso Quarry Manager of the Year (10 or more FTE) – to recognise an individual quarry manager, where there are more than 10 FTE workers on-site, with demonstrable outstanding achievements within the quarrying industry. The successful manager will receive a framed certificate, plus a $3000 contribution to a professional development opportunity.
  • Retracom Sydenham Hill Quarry Operator of the Year – to recognise an individual quarry operator, with demonstrable achievements within the quarrying industry. The prize is a $3000 contribution to a professional development opportunity.

To see some examples of awards conferred on individuals in recent years, I recommend you read the stories about Phillip Pallisier and Keith Joy in this issue.

I encourage everyone to consider applying or making a nomination before submissions close on 31 August, 2017. You can download entry forms from quarry.com.au or contact the IQA’s membership and awards officer Robyn Cousins for further information,
