Guide focuses on health, safety systems

A new wall planner for the quarrying and mining industries is this year focusing on work health and safety management systems.

Pro-Visual Publishing, with the support of the Australian Mines & Metal Association and the Minerals Industry Safety & Health Centre, has produced the Mining Industry Guide to Workplace Safety. Each chart is intended as a quick reference point for management and staff.

A work health and safety management system (WHSMS) is the primary means of ensuring the safe operation of a mine. Due to the dynamic and varied nature of tasks conducted on mine sites and the environment in which they are done, any type of mining is considered dangerous. This guide provides a useful reference for operators and workers on current risk management and procedures.

Other relevant topics include ventilation and roads, and other vehicle operating areas. It is necessary for workers to pay attention to roads and other vehicle operating areas because of the potential risks of fatalities, vehicle collisions and road conditions.

The types of vehicle activities conducted on the road or operating area will indicate the sorts of hazards that may be present, so it is important for all involved in the workplace to be aware of road signage, restricted zones, vehicles and pedestrians to minimise risk of injury and harm.

“I would like to thank all of the sponsors of the Mining Industry Guide to Workplace Safety 2014,” Pro-Visual Publishing CEO John Hutchings said. “Their support has made it possible for the guide to be distributed free of charge.”

Isringhausen, which supplies innovative seating systems and technical springs for commercial vehicles to the quarrying and mining industries, is one of the sponsors of the industry guide.
