$280 million project in quick time

The widening of the Great Eastern Highway in Western Australia has been completed nine months ahead of schedule and is now open to traffic.

The $280 million project has widened the Great Eastern Highway between Kooyong Road and the Tonkin Highway from four to six lanes.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese said one of his government’s key pledges prior to the last election was for this project to be completed, as it will ease congestion along the highway.

The work increases the road’s carrying capacity between Kooyong Road and the Tonkin Highway by some 70 per cent, from 50,000 to 85,000 vehicles a day. It also improves access to Perth’s airport and surrounding areas, improves safety for local residents and other regular users and delivers better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

This project is part of a $3.7 billion capital works program that the Federal Government has been rolling out across Western Australia over the past five years.

“Indeed, we've almost doubled annual Federal infrastructure spending from $154 to $261 per Western Australian,” Albanese said. “The widening of the Great Eastern Highway was jointly funded by the Federal ($224 million) and Western Australian ($56 million) governments. These works will complement other improvements to the highway, including the new interchange at the intersection with the Roe Highway, which was completed last year.”
