Horseplay ends in tears

Billy the horse wanted to go swimming and chose a flooded quarry in Wexford, England.
This bit of horseplay developed into a major rescue operation as the Wexford Civil Defence came to his rescue as well as “John”, a worker with the local livery yard who had been clearing the area and dived into the quarry waters after Billy.

John swam after the horse and guided him onto a ledge where they were stranded until a passer-by called for assistance.

It took five Civil Defence crew to rescue Billy. John was thrown a harness and rope to place over Billy’s head. This was used to guide Billy to a flat area where he could come out of the water.

It appears John had to make his own way out.
