Revealed: SSAB unveils world’s first emission-free steel powder

SSAB has unveiled an emission-free steel powder that will open up 3D printing to make high-strength, lightweight steel products.

SSAB has developed the steel powder for commercial deliveries from recycled SSAB Zero steel.

“This is a game-changer in the world of 3D-printed steel. SSAB has already proven it’s possible to produce steel without carbon dioxide emissions,” SSAB special steels EVP and head Johnny Sjöström said.

“Now we’re merging emission-free steel with powder technology to enable sustainable 3D-printed design with unlimited imagination.”

Conventional 3D printing of steel products can contain large amounts of CO2. SSAB believes that by pulverising its emission-free steel with fossil-free energy sources only, the carbon dioxide emissions from steelmaking are reduced to virtually zero.

Four years ago, SSAB invested in a steel powder production facility in Oxelösund to produce premium advanced high-strength steel powder for additive manufacturing, also known as 3D-printing, as a complement to SSAB’s regular steel offering.

The steel powder is suited towards tailormade components or spare parts requiring high structural integrity and optimal functionality.

“3D-printing high-strength steel components will help reduce the amount of raw material used, and cut the weight and increase functionality of the final product,” head of SSAB Powder Technology Jesper Vang said.

“This is especially important for industries, such as automotive or heavy machinery, that are trying to save weight, increase performance, and reduce their CO2 footprint.”
