Caterpillar’s MineStar Edge platform is designed to complement its growing range of digital technologies.
The MineStar Edge platform aims to create what Caterpillar describes as an “operational ecosystem” for quarrying and mining companies.
With the potential for dramatic productivity increases, MineStar Edge provides accessibility to data across an entire operation, allowing managers to view, evaluate and improve operations through the technology.
Caterpillar has designed MineStar Edge to be cloud-based, which reduces costs of deployment, service and training through its subscription-managed application.
MineStar Edge combines a plethora of advanced technologies, including data fusion, machine learning and artificial intelligence to allow it continue to grow through data collection.
“MineStar Edge makes it possible to measure, manage, analyse and improve the entire mining operation,” MineStar Solutions product manager Sean McGinnis said. “The design makes Edge cost-effective even for smaller operations—with the capability to scale up as needed. This platform will grow with Caterpillar and our customers.”
Information about a site operation can be accessed via a computer or tablet from anywhere in the world that has an internet connection, allowing managers to receive information in near real time.
“A limestone quarry increased production by 20 per cent by using the information to reduce underloads, and tracking data helped them improve blend compliance,” said Cat MineStar solutions commercial manager Ryan Howell. “We estimate that sites currently using paper reporting systems will be able to increase production by 20 per cent to 30 per cent.”
