Young members visit great lake scheme

The professional development and networking day was held in Western Sydney and kicked off with 12 representatives from across the Illawarra, Sydney, Hunter and Northern Rivers sub-branches meeting in Parramatta before jumping on a bus to the Penrith Lakes Development Corporation.
The group was greeted by guides Rob Golaszewski and Alan Bond who took them through a site presentation on the history of Penrith Lakes quarry, its current status and final plan for closure, rehabilitation and land use.
There were some interesting statistics. Around 140 million tonnes of aggregate has been extracted to date since the quarry?s origins in 1880 and it is still running at a 14,000 tonnes per day target at the Boral Emu plains plant.
{{image2-a:r-w:200}}The group was taken on a guided bus tour of the site including the current worked areas, rehabilitation zones, the filming area for the next Mad Max sequel and recent weir construction.
Andrew Hales of Boral Emu Plains Quarry then took the group for a tour around the processing plant before they headed east to the Humes Blacktown pre-cast concrete facility.
At Blacktown, Roy Simon covered off the site safety induction and PPE requirements before splitting the group into two and taking them on a guided walk through the manufacturing process. He described the variety of pre-cast products that were being made and also provided an up close review of finished products in stock.
The group?s final destination was the Holcim Lidcombe concrete plant where they were greeted by Michael Draper and given an overview of the plant, as this site has a unique wet mix process. This was followed by a detailed look at the site?s water management controls.
