Government funding to improve road safety

The Federal Government, Richmond Valley Council and Lismore Council will fund the $4.4 million Page Road Upgrade Package, with $2 million, $1.4 million and $1 million being pledged respectively.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the funding would address ‘deterioration’ at key Lismore roads including Conway Street, in the Lismore CBD.

“These improvements will enhance safety and quality while reducing ongoing maintenance costs on key local road links,” Chester stated.

Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan echoed similar sentiments.

“Our government is delivering the right infrastructure for Northern Rivers. Fixing the deterioration of these routes will enhance access to Lismore from Broadwater and Woodburn, while the Conway Street works will support Lismore businesses, tourism and the local community by upgrading this important arterial road,” Hogan said.

Richmond Valley Mayor Robert Mustow added Lismore’s Woodburn Coraki Road upgrade was particularly important as it included a freight connection to the Pacific Highway.

Of the road upgrade, Mustow said: “Woodburn Coraki Road links Richmond Valley townships and supports primary industry [including quarrying] and heavy haulage, making this upgrade critical to ensuring freight transport can safely access main arterial routes”.

Lismore City Mayor Isaac Smith added the upgrades to Broadwater Road, Wyrallah Road and Conway Street would focus on improving road surface quality.

Construction on the upgrades is earmarked to commence next month, with all projects scheduled to be completed by late 2018.
