Fund unveiled to assist the international industry

Institute of Quarrying Australia (IQA) president Clayton Hill said the International Presidents’ Fund was designed to support a core purpose – to advance the science and practice of quarrying internationally for the public.

‘As a group we now have an agreed, collective vision to deliver this objective,’ Hill said at the annual QuarryNZ conference in July. ‘We have formed a central fund comprising contributions from all Institutes and international branches.’

He said the fund was specifically set up to support professional development opportunities and the ‘internationalisation’ of the quarrying industry.

The international IQ presidents attending the meeting included host Peter Morgan (IQ New Zealand), Miles Watkins (IQ UK), Clayton Hill (IQA), Ir Lee Kam Fatt (IQ Malaysia), Lazarus Meko (IQ Southern Africa) and Alfred Chan (IQ Hong Kong).

The incoming IQ UK president Phil Redmond, who is the managing director at Hanson Aggregates UK, and IQ UK chief executive James Thorne joined the rest.

The annual International Presidents’ Meeting is a forum for each Institute to update on its local and regional activities, successes and challenges.

‘The quarrying and minerals extractives industry operates wherever reserves of minerals can be extracted economically,’ Thorne said. ‘As an Institute, we need to continue to work towards a clear and consistent approach to support our members and the sector around the world.’

The incumbent IQ UK president Watkins, whose term finishes in October, said the cascading benefits of an international IQ would be felt by members, employers and governments alike, as well as enhancing the industry’s wider reputation and making the sector a safer and better place to work.

With thanks to the IQ UK for its input.
