Early morning truck movements approved

Under the new arrangements, 27 trucks per hour are able to leave between 5.00am and 6.00am, while the movements in the following hour have been increased to 38.

From 7.00am to 10.00am, the current limit of 40 trucks will remain, as will the limit of 23 trucks per hour from 10.00pm to 5.00am.

The daily limit of 500 trucks per day is also unaltered.

In a statement provided to Quarry, a Hanson spokesperson said: “This modification will provide greater flexibility to manage product dispatch activities to Hanson’s concrete batching plants and road construction markets by reducing the time trucks spend in peak traffic flows which would in turn benefit commuters travelling towards Wollongong and Sydney.”

The NSW Department of Planning and Environment agreed to the planned changes because the additional truck movements “would not result in any significant impacts beyond those previously assessed and approved”.

Hanson, the quarry operator, previously agreed to Shellharbour City Council’s request to establish a 50km/h speed limit and suspend 24-hour trucking on weekends.

The site has been used for the extractive industry since 1880, but more recent use of the site was established in the 1960s. Bass Point Quarry has approval to operate until 2044. It currently produces up to four million tonnes per year of high quality hard rock (basalt) products for the construction industry. These products are transported by road to Sydney and other areas around NSW.

The quarry employs around 70 people in various roles, as well as additional contractors.
