Chemical supplier gains rezoning permission

Brimbank City Council, in Melbourne?s western suburbs, has approved rezoning for a Deer Park industrial site owned by Orica. The approval of an amendment to rezone approximately half of the 150 hectare site ? almost half the size of Melbourne?s CBD – for commercial development follows a process that started in 2011 when the council nominated the site as a ?strategic development site? as part of the Brimbank Municipal Strategic Statement.

The amendment is subject to review by the Victorian Minister for Planning Matthew Guy.

Orica’s general manager of property Daniel Wise said it was a positive approach encouraging economic investment in the area. ?We believe the site represents a significant urban in-fill opportunity and has real potential to be transformed for the benefit of the surrounding community and Melbourne?s west,? Wise said.

?With multiple development options possible on the site, it is expected that substantial new investment and employment opportunities will be created. The Deer Park site can support a wide range of future activities including large format retail, light industrial, commercial and office use.?

Remediation activities are already underway at the site, which is bound by the Western Ring Road and Ballarat Road. It is situated 15 kilometres west of the Melbourne CBD and 11 kilometres south west of Melbourne International Airport.

Brimbank Council administrators said the council was looking ?100 years? into the future to try to identify areas for growth. ?The changes to the heritage overlay will also ensure that buildings of historical value are maintained where practicable,? chairman of administrators John Watson said.

?It also represents a shift from older manufacturing to new commercial activity in Brimbank which is exciting and will help to create new long term job opportunities.?

Orica Deer Park has been used since 1885 for various forms of manufacturing and the storage of chemicals.
