Registrations open for CMIC18: Building tomorrow’s Australia

The Institute of Quarrying Australia (IQA) and Cement Concrete and Aggregates Australia (CCAA) are the joint convenors of CMIC18. To be hosted at Sydney’s International Convention Centre (inset) between 19 and 21 September, this year’s theme is “Building tomorrow’s Australia”.

“The construction materials industry will fuel the infrastructure boom … It is therefore crucial that our industry responds to the challenge of ‘Building Tomorrow’s Australia,’” an organising committee statement noted.

“Construction jobs have already grown strongly, up 64,400 in the second quarter of 2017 alone – and for the first time in [more than] 30 years, this industry reflects just short of one in 10 jobs in the broader economy.

“Our industry must leverage off technology and its exponential growth as concepts such as ‘driverless trucks’ and ‘drones’ have already moved from science fiction to reality,” it added.

Keynote speakers

Industry leaders and keynote speakers (subject to other commitments) will include:

  • Chris Riddell, a global futurist.

  • Michael Pascoe, financial journalist and commentator.

  • Dylan Alcott OAM, one of Australia’s most successful and recognised Paralympians.

  • Phil White, founder of start-up business BlockCycle.

  • Gordon Wymer, the chief commercial officer of the Snowy Hydro project.

  • Kathryn Fagg, board member of the Reserve Bank of Australia, and board member of Boral Australia.

  • Libby Lyons, the director of the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, a Federal Government statutory body.

  • Bruce Harvey, the principal and director of consultancy business Resolution88.

The MC for the event will be respected journalist Helen Fanning, who has previously compèred CMIC proceedings.

Provisional program

The format of the conference – which was first introduced in 2014 – will incorporate an exhibition open day on Wednesday, 19 September. This will focus on providing delegates with maximum exposure to suppliers, peers and customers.

{{image2-a:r-w:300}}In 2016, in Melbourne, the corresponding industry open day attracted more than 70 additional registrations, mostly from quarrying or concrete batch plant staff that couldn’t attend the full three days. There were 30 presentations throughout the day from trade exhibitors and construction materials companies.

A welcome reception, sponsored by Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia, will provide further networking opportunities for delegates on the Wednesday evening.

The conference proper will commence on the morning of Thursday, 20 September, with a politician (to be confirmed) as the opening speaker.

The first day of the program will focus on a range of topics: the economy and the political environment; the future of energy security and innovation; and trends in the construction materials market.

The conference gala dinner that evening, sponsored by Komatsu Australia, will feature high profile entertainment and be hosted at Sydney’s Luna Park.

Day two of the program – on Friday, 21 September – will comprise of morning plenary sessions – on community and the environment, and people and diversity – before delegates attend a business leaders forum lunch jointly presented with Roads Australia. The lunch will provide delegates with the opportunity to network with other industry participants and hear from key leaders in the infrastructure sector.

In 2016, more than 400 delegates attended the first business leaders forum.

The three days of festivities will conclude with a post-event networking cruise on Sydney Harbour.

Sponsorships

In addition to the gala dinner and welcome reception sponsors, the conference partner is Cement Australia. Terex Jaques and Landair Surveys are the respective water bottle and networking drinks partners.

Exhibitors already confirmed for CMIC18 include BreatheSafe, Gebr Pfeiffer, Gordyn & Palmer, Mapei, Terex Jaques and Trimble.
