Submersible pump solutions for abrasive applications

A new heavy-duty, single-phase submersible sump pump has been released by Australian Pump Industries.

Manufactured by Tsurumi, the high-head pump is ideal for batch plant or construction site applications – or anywhere liquids or even light slurries are to be handled.

The 76mm Tsurumi NK3-22 port pump can handle flows of up to 525 litres per minute (lpm) and is lightweight enough to be moved around batch plants in an emergency to wherever there is a pump breakdown or extra capacity is required.

The high head performance means heads of up to 24 metres can be handled with little difficulty. Its slimline design also enables it to fit into narrow locations.

The pump’s solids-handling capability is based on a semi-vortex impeller design fitted with a synthetic rubber ware plate.

“The vulcanised wear plate resists abrasion and provides long life and consistent pump performance”, Aussie Pumps’ chief engineer John Hales said.

“The pump features a double mechanical seal of silicone carbide located in an oil chamber. That oil chamber features a patented ‘oil lifter’ that provides forced lubrication into the mechanical seal.”

Hales says the semi-vortex impeller allows for the passage of large stringy solids. The impeller’s design also accelerates water passing through the pump casing, creating a vortex that assists the smooth transit of solids in suspension.

This feature protects the motor from moisture wicking inside the cable, in the event the cable is damaged on-site or the end is submerged.

Like all Tsurumi pumps offered by Australian Pump Industries, the NK3-22 comes with a three-year warranty. Hales was confident it would be a big success.

“Every batch plant, every construction site, for that matter every hire company servicing the heavy industries should be equipped with these super-versatile but relatively lightweight pumps,” he said.

Although the pump is built like a tank, it weighs only 29 kilograms. The maximum solids handling is 6mm spherical solids. The pumps are designed by Tsurumi to have a maximum water depth of 50m.

Aussie Pumps has also been working closely with producers to drive up productivity in batch plants. Large capacity submersible pumps that fill the batching water tanks faster mean plants can load more agitators per shift and maximise profitability.

“Pumping water into the batching header tanks can be a major bottleneck, increasing agitator loading times,” Aussie Pumps’ Neil Bennett said. “Many of our customers have achieved significant gains in productivity by converting their batch water recycling pumps to the high-capacity Tsurumi KTZ411s.”

The Tsurumi KTZ411 is an 11kW submersible capable of delivering more than 1000 lpm at a head height of 35m.

With that performance, the pump can solve the common issue of pipe silting. Over time, sediment builds up on the insides of pipes and reduces the internal diameter. This restricts flow, both accelerating the silting issue and reducing the fill rate of the header tank.

“We have proved that a high capacity pump like the KTZ411 is able to push water through with a larger flow rate,” said Bennett.

“High velocity flows mean less silting, therefore less maintenance and a less noticeable drop in performance of the pump over time.”

The KTZ411 is part of Tsurumi’s KTZ series. These pumps have been purpose-built to withstand abrasive conditions and potentially offer batch plants a considerably longer service life. The pumps come fitted with three-phase, heavy-duty, two-pole motors with thermal protection against dry running. They are manufactured from heavy-duty cast iron with high chrome wear components.

“Tsurumi submersibles are uniquely built to withstand dry running conditions,” Bennett said. “The seals are cooled and continuously lubricated in a sealed oil chamber.”

The KTZ411 also features anti-wicking cables and silicon carbide seals that maximise performance longevity in extremely challenging environments.
