A simple-powered, magnetic solution

Quality construction products require quality materials and services – which is what Granite Rock Quarry provides.

In the past year, the company has bought the newest addition to the Steinert magnetic separation range – the Steinert 22 MP. This is a mains-powered overhead suspension electromagnet, which doesn’t require a separate power supply and has been designed to make use of the customers’ existing mains power supply.

“The reason for choosing the MP magnet was to prevent steel travelling downstream in the processing line,” Stephen Bennett from Granite Rock Quarry said.

This was causing the crushers to jam, hence causing downtime.”

Having not worked with this product before, Bennett said his experience had been good, and working with Steinert made his job easy.

The quarry originally had another magnetic solution in mind – a metal detector. However, Steinert sales engineer Anthony Grisancich went through the quarry and discussed its processes with the Granite Rock Quarry team, and found the Steinert MP magnet to be the most affordable and effective solution for the quarry’s tramp metal issues.

Bennett said the best thing about including the MP magnet at the plant is it has saved “a lot of heartache. The crushers are now jam-free and downtime is prevented. All it takes is a metal tooth from a former job – something so simple, yet it causes major damage to the crushers.”

The Steinert MP range has numerous benefits, eg:

  • It provides a reduced overall footprint, as there is no area required for a control cabinet.

  • It offers reduced costs of installation time and commissioning.

  • It is available in a range of size and models – including self-cleaning.

  • It is Australian-made.

  • It requires a suitable three-phase power source.

Bennett said the Steinert MP suspension magnet was the right tool for the job, especially for the harsh requirements of the quarrying industry.

“This was so simple to install and it does the job well,” he said.

“From a customer’s perspective, from the very first phone call, right through to the magnet now working away in the plant – everything has just gone perfectly.”

The Bairnsdale quarry has a secondary plant expansion under way and since the success of the first MP magnet – preventing tramp material entering the plant – another 22 MP magnet has been commissioned.

Steinert provides magnetic separation and sensor-based sorting solutions for the Australian cement, aggregates, slag and recycling materials sectors. It also offers an extended range of quarry solutions as a distributor for Hazemag and allmineral, which includes crushers, centre sizers and hammer mills through to jigs and classifiers.
