Road contractor installs loader scales to assist mobile crusher

The Roading Company operates throughout the Southland and Otago regions of New Zealand.

Active since 2003, the business has completed major projects for the New Zealand Transport Agency, local government, the NZ Department of Conservation and private developers.

“The technical ability of our project management and engineering staff allows us to offer extensive design services, in addition to our construction expertise,” said crushing manager Nathan White, who is a B-grade certified quarry manager. “We pride ourselves on working collaboratively with clients, engineers and the wider project team to achieve ‘best for project’ results.”

The Roading Company’s mobile crushing plant operation complements its road construction operation, enabling the production and supply of various roading, drainage aggregate and sealing chip to its business and the local market. The Roading Company provides a range of high quality materials at competitive rates.

“Our plant is mobile, which gives us the capability to produce aggregate throughout the regions. We can operate crushing from a number of sites around Southland and Otago,” White said.

White was recently looking for an alternate machine scale for use on the business’s new Powerscreen crushing plant, which has been contract crushing in Queenstown, Central Otago. He contacted supplier Position Partners to discuss machine scales and The Roading Company’s requirements. White was interested in working with machine scale providers that would offer premium service and support.

Position Partners recommended the RDS Loadmaster Alpha 100 loader scale and worked with White to implement the product onto The Roading Company’s new Doosan DL420 wheel loader in Queenstown.

White found the loader scale was implemented simply and easily, and all his operators picked it up quickly.

“The Doosan DL420 and the Alpha 100 front end loader scale complement each other on this very busy site,” White said. “The ability to easily save and maintain records of the many materials produced at the same time by the new crushing plant has made the Alpha 100 loader scale a welcome addition to the site.

“On a busy site, we needed the ability to quickly weigh products onto trucks, stockpiles and into the crushing plant without causing any hindrance or holding us back.

“The Alpha 100 allows our machines to keep moving while showing constant real time progress and without having to take your hand off the loader’s controls.

“Being adaptive to other technology, the Alpha 100 will allow us to close circuit our operation, from positive adjustments to stock, forwarding information to our office, through to invoicing materials straight to our clients.”

Position Partners’ Loadmaster Alpha 100 scale can help project managers overcome a broad range of challenges including load record keeping, “chain of responsibility” legislation, underutilisation of plant, and equipment matching for productivity.

“Cutting back on paperwork has been a big time saver for our site staff, and the Alpha 100 has played a big part in this,” White said.

The key benefits of the Loadmaster Alpha 100 are its ease of use and its ability to be configured as either a basic scale or a fully featured load management recording tool.

“The Alpha 100’s extremely easy to navigate around, yet has very few limitations for our type of business,” White said. “It allows quick adding of products, continuous viewing of product information and control of summarised data at the end of the day, month or even the end of the year.

“This includes a quick look up of historic materials produced. This makes it easy to download, back up and view information while in the field.

“Through our busy construction season, our machines are extremely busy, and the Alpha 100 accompanied by the DL420 requires trouble-free running with very little maintenance required. They work well together.”

The service and support offered by Position Partners was also an important part of White’s decision-making process. He was concerned that introducing new technology to The Roading Company’s quarry sector would be challenging, but was pleased at the high quality of back-up and support.

“Their team is spread across the country and have been more than helpful when operators need any assistance,” White said.

“An easy set-up, good induction and friendly staff have made it very easy to adapt to a new system, and I look forward to using the RDS system we have installed.”
