Bespoke solutions that assist tailings pond, slime management

The Australian market has had continued high infrastructure demands and there are materials washing solutions that are recommended for producers supplying the construction market. A typical sand washing operation uses a minimum of 100,000 litres per hour, which is clean water being used to wash sand and aggregates. This water is converted into waste water and then pumped or piped away into tailings ponds, at which point it exits the washing system.

Managing and maintaining a slime pond can be extremely expensive and time-consuming for an extractive operation – not only in justifying water expenses but also in securing the necessary permissions and abiding with local government regulations in relation to water usage.

When a wet washing plant is combined with a CDE AquaCycle water recovery system, it is estimated that up to 90 per cent of this waste water can be recycled for immediate reuse by the customer.

It is further estimated that up to 95 per cent of waste water can be recycled when a CDE filter press or centrifuge solution is added to a CDE AquaCycle, completely eliminating the need for tailings ponds. This not only minimises water consumption but also aids businesses tthat need to show compliance when reapplying for water licences.

The addition of a filter press to a washing plant also offers two-fold advantages. Not only does a filter press provide a method of safer disposal of dried tailings but it offers the potential for ultra-fines to be recovered and reused as a blend medium for other products.

CDE Australia, working with its world-class engineering team, has delivered complete bespoke plant solutions across Australia in the last couple of years. These plant solutions cover tailings pond management and slime management in the sand and aggregates, industrial sands and mining sectors.

Marius Snyman is CDE Global’s Australasian regional manager. “We are in a unique position to assist the local market and producers to improve their plant performance and efficiency, and at the same time assist them to realise genuine cost savings for their business by using cutting edge wet processing technology,” he said.

“It is good news that many of our clients across Australia have already saved – and continue to save – high volumes of water,” Snyman said. “CDE is unique in this region in terms of the range of tailor-made products it offers, which are both high tech and simple to use.

“With more than two decades of experience in supplying wet processing solutions, we have carved a reputation of excellence internationally and our existing customers in Australia regularly become repeat clients as their production – and therefore business – grows after their CDE installation,” Snyman added. “The future of washing is bright in Australia.”
