Awards to celebrate industry?s social contribution

Any company operating within the mining, extractive or energy resource industries is eligible for nomination in the 2016 South Australian Premier’s Community Excellence Awards in Mining and Energy.

According to the SA Department of State Development, the awards aim to celebrate the companies within these industries that deliver social benefits to the state’s local and regional communities.

“The winning companies or businesses set an example to industry of innovation and excellence in corporate social responsibility … and will be able to differentiate themselves amongst other companies and businesses with a higher level of credibility,” the department’s website stated.

The awards comprise three categories. The Award for Excellence in Social Inclusion will be presented to a company that has taken steps to help SA’s most disadvantaged citizens leverage the resource sector’s social and economic benefits by involving them in its operation.

The Supporting Communities category will recognise a company that has demonstrated industry excellence in developing, leading or supporting community-wide participation in social or community activities that help improve social well-being, foster creativity and innovation, and/or increase cultural awareness.

An Award for Excellence in Leadership – Women in Resources will also be awarded to a company that actively encourages female participation in the resources sector through internal initiatives, such as the delivery of training programs specifically for women or providing opportunities for female tertiary students.

“[The winners] will be awarded the opportunity to share their experiences with government, industry and the community,” the department website noted. “Most importantly, businesses will highlight their respect for the community in which they operate and the broader SA community.”

Nominations close on 18 March, 2016, with the winners to be announced at a resources industry dinner on 20 April, 2016.
