A jury of 40 design specialists spent days evaluating the entries, according to strict judging criteria assessing the degree of innovation, level of functionality and the durability of the products.
Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is celebrating a trifecta after it won the Red Dot product design award for its tracked excavator, a visibility vest and backpack.
Sandvik has been awarded the Red Dot award for its high pressure down the hole (DTH) drill.
Tracked excavator
Three Volvo CE products, the EC380E tracked excavator, the Volvo visibility vest and the BP30L identity backpack beat thousands of international entries. Now the company can boast that its articulated haulers, wheel loaders, excavators and merchandise have all won Red Dot awards.

The EC380E is one of the first excavators from the new Volvo design generation and exemplifies a complete redesign of a Volvo CE machine. The heavy-duty production machine has been designed to work on tough job sites.
Volvo CE?s visibility vest evolved from an idea submitted by an employee in the sales and marketing division who wanted a jacket that was a stylish vest that could transform into a high visibility jacket.
The BP30L identity backpack was made for tough conditions on construction sites and incorporates a durable, waterproof exterior and safety features.
?Our designers approached the merchandise project just as they do when designing construction equipment,? Anders P Larsson, executive vice president of Volvo CE?s Technology function, explained. ?The modern appearance and innovative design of each product reflects the premium quality of the Volvo brand.?

DTH drill rig
The new Pantera DI6400 DTH percussive drill rig was developed to take advantage of mining industry trends towards fully autonomous operation, with options allowing owners to benefit from automation technology as their needs and mining operations change. The drill platform is available for DTH and top hammer applications.
“Winning globally prestigious design awards such as the Red Dot is of course something we are proud of, as it adds an independent seal of approval to our product. It also supports our customer focus and innovation values,? Jan Petzold, vice president of Sandvik Mining?s UG drilling product area, said.
The award-winning products are being showcased in the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany.
