Global mining group appoints new president

Smith, who is currently president of the Sulzer Pumps Division, was previously head of the Weir Group?s mining division ? a post he held for 11 years. The company said Smith would be joining Sandvik at a date that would be communicated later.
The current president of Sandvik Mining, Gary Hughes, will assume the position as head of sales and marketing for the same business area. 
Sandvik president and CEO Olof Faxander said, ?Gary Hughes has contributed substantially to our mining operations during difficult times, providing Scot Smith with an excellent platform to develop our business even further.
?Scot Smith will strengthen the Sandvik Mining management team, while Gary Hughes will make a great contribution to the team in his new role focusing on sales and marketing.?
In addition, Sandvik appointed ?sa Thunman as its executive vice president and general counsel for the company. Both Thunman and Smith will be included on the company?s group executive management team. 
Sandvik will also incorporate ZZ Zhang, executive vice president and head of emerging markets, and Olle Wijk, executive vice president and head of group research and development, into the group executive management team. 
?Bringing research and development and a member representing emerging markets into group executive management will further strengthen Sandvik in our continued pursuit to set the industry standard,? Faxander said.
