Guidelines on Quarry Rehabilitation published

The project was led by the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) together with a group of companies that have employed successful methods in responsible quarrying.

Thirty operational case studies are featured throughout the publication and lend practical application to the theory of quarry rehabilitation.

The guidelines described in the publication were established by consensus among CSI members and cover a wide range of quarry types and locations around the world, including Australia.

The guidelines reflect principles of reclamation, including defining the context and assessing baseline conditions, setting sustainable technical and financial objectives, financial planning and developing and implementing rehabilitation plans as well as monitoring, adjusting and post-closure land use.

These guidelines apply to new and existing sites and work from the premise that the minimum consideration is legal compliance.

Communication with stakeholders and operators was a key to the process and external reviews were conducted on the guidelines to provide a balanced document.
