Young South Australians at the quarry face

In South Australia, this was recently done through the IQA South Australian Young Members Network (SA YMN) together with a number of willing companies who lent their facilities, staff and time.

Recently, the SA YMN toured two sites: the Penrice limestone quarry and the Rocla sand quarry, both in the Barossa Valley,

The SA YMN group of James Rowe (Penrice), Tim Clifton (Penrice), Kwabena Antwi (Holcim), Matt Allen (SA Tractors) and Aidan Seaton (Hitachi) have diverse skills base working in operational, distribution, finance and sales management.

The tour of the Penrice plant with the pugmill, glass manufacturing process and aggregates plant was conducted by John Leatherbarrow, Penrice?s shotfirer who showed the team how to tie in a loaded shot prior to firing the blast. Many of the team had never seen a blast before.

At Rocla, the team was met by quarry manager Gino Tarca and given a tour of the operations including the water catchment and silt retention processes, environmental rehabilitation, current pit shell and the manufacturing plant.

Water management plays a large part of the operational performance of the Rocla operation, as the water goes through a number of different filtration processes before being added back into the final process.
