Rocky road for this rolling stone

The two-storey tall boulder is an art exhibit for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), located on LA?s famous Wilshire Boulevard where it will appear to levitate ? quite a feat for boulder of its size.

The granite rock is artist Michael Heizer?s exhibit Levitated Mass.

Other feats for the boulder are that it will be among the best-travelled boulders since the pyramids as it moves through four counties and 22 cities covering 170km.

And it will be among the most expensive boulders as it has had a custom-built 89m transporter with 44 axles built to carry it.

On top of that, 100 utility districts have to take down traffic signals, overhead wires and other obstacles in order to let the boulder pass. The cost of the project is estimated at around $US10 million ($A9 million).

Since the transporter takes up three lanes, roads must be closed to traffic and so the slow moving transporter can only travel during the night with its entourage of 60. Let?s hope the GPS works, as the transporter can?t go under or over any bridges or overpasses.

While the rock sleeps during the day, it has to be shrink wrapped for protection. Not sure what it is being protected from, though ? the elements, graffiti artists or angry Americans recovering from their financial crisis.
