His, hers and mine

?When I started this degree I had no idea he would be doing his course, and he didn?t either,? said Kara Newbury.

?It?s a unique situation and we?re both pretty excited about it. It will be great to be able to share this with him… and I think mum is pretty happy.?

This is the first time a father and daughter have been in the same graduating class from the NSW University School of Mining Engineering.

Ms Newbury, who is working as a graduate engineer at the Mandalong coal mine on the central coast of NSW, completed a bachelor?s degree in mining engineering. Her father, Rick Newbury, completed a graduate diploma in mine ventilation.

Mr Newbury works as a contract under-manager in Narrabri, NSW and has worked in the mining industry for more than 30 years.

It was no surprise that Ms Newbury headed to the mines, as it runs in the family with her mother a mining operator and her sister a mechanic.

And Ms Newbury isn?t through following dad, as she hopes to eventually enrol in the same mine ventilation course that he just completed.
