Chucky comes to play in Frankston

Secreted rather incongruously amongst the exhibits in the Toytopia sand-sculpting exhibition on the Frankston Waterfront this month is the homicidal movie doll Chucky. The menacing character is part of the 2011-2012 annual event and is hiding among a whole host of more friendly toys like teddy bears, rocking horses and tin soldiers.

Aidan J Graham Quarries in Langwarrin supplied the 3.5 tonnes of sand to the waterfront because quarry sand is a better shape for sculpting, as the grains are square and stick together well. Beach sand is too smooth and round.

Since the sand has to stick together from December 2011 to April 2012, the more help it gets the better.  Another way of helping it survive the rigors of wind, rain and children is a spray coating with a water resistant biodegradable solution that can extend the life of these sculptures for years.

In this case, though, the sculptures will be knocked down using bulldozers at the end of the display and the sand taken away to be reused.

Toytopia is on in Frankston, Victoria and will finish on 26 April, 2012. Chucky would be pleased to make your acquaintance amongst all the other boys and girls!
