Bonfiglioli, Ontrak win gear excellence award

The win was for Ontrak?s feeder breakers, supplied for use at BHP Billiton?s Appin coal mine in New South Wales and incorporating Bonfiglioli components.

The Ontrak crusher uses a heavy-duty bevel helical HDO gearbox in an alignment-free configuration (AFD) with built-in slip for coal crushing. The AFD arrangement, engineered in Sydney, extends the versatility of Bonfiglioli?s HD series of advanced heavy-duty drives by cost-effectively integrating the motor and gearbox. This offers an alternative to the laser-aligned baseplate style of crusher.

A smaller Bonfiglioli A90 helical bevel modified gearbox with a hydraulic motor provides a conveyor drive to bring coal to the crusher. The entire feeder breaker is made mobile by track drives running Bonfiglioli?s 711 hubs with a releasable brake system for towing.

Bonfiglioli?s HD AFD design is part of its expanding range of Australasian engineered mounting options intended for specific applications. The HD AFD options cater for capacities up to 1722kW and 150,000 Nm, complementing the company?s Hi Torque drives and offer quick assembly and maintenance of high speed components, including fans, fluid couplings and brakes.

Initial costs are reduced with the HD AFD compared with traditional baseplate designs and the system allows high speed components to be removed and replaced without re-alignment.

Applications for the HD AFD include conveyor and shuttle drives, bucket elevators, inching drives and general materials handling.
