Korean, Chinese manufacturers close in on big three

Compiled by UK-based KHL Limited, the new updated tabulation gives 2010 turnover figures for the world?s top 50 construction equipment companies. The revenues are converted to $US at the average exchange rate.

Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment (DI CE) climbed nine places (from 15th in 2009) into sixth place while two Chinese companies ? Sany and Zoomlion (seventh and ninth respectively) ? entered the top 10 manufacturers for the first time. XCMG, which rounded out the top 10, was the only Chinese company to make the top 10 in 2009.

Volvo, which finished fifth in the 2009 survey, climbed into fourth, displacing Liebherr (down to fifth) and almost equalling third-placed Hitachi in revenue.
In all, the global construction industry in 2010 experienced a 40 per cent growth in revenues ? a total of $US152 billion ? a record bounceback from a very depressed 2009. However, this figure was still behind the 2008 record of $168 billion in profits.
Doosan?s rise into the middle rungs of the top 10 has been attributed to a rebound in sales in the Asian market plus improvements in the compact loader market via its subsidiary Bobcat.
DI CE chief executive officer Anthony Helsham described 2010 as an ?excellent year? for the company with a turnover of $US5.2 billion (up from $US3.2 billion in 2009).
?Doosan was also the only company in the top six manufacturers to produce 2010 sales figures that were larger than those recorded for 2008,? Mr Helsham said. ?The company is well on the way to achieving our goal of being a top player in the global construction equipment industry.?
In 2010, DI CE recorded a 59 per cent increase in sales. Unit sales of Doosan heavy equipment in China, including excavators, wheel loaders and articulated dump trucks, leapt 72 per cent in 2010. In Doosan?s joint Asia Pacific and Emerging Markets sector, the number of heavy equipment products sold in 2010 was over 86 per cent higher than the figure for 2009.
Unit sales of compact equipment comprising both Doosan and Bobcat branded products also grew in the North America/Oceania region by 41 per cent and by 33 per cent in China.
