Foam suppression system works its charms on mobile and fixed plant

Controlling dust emissions is a major issue for most sites. For Hutchison Quarries, it was critical for its mobile crushing plant in Glenn Innes, New South Wales and its fixed plant in Warwick, Queensland. The mobile and fixed crushing circuits had become dust hazards.

Dust was a significant problem when crushing at Glenn Innes, primarily due to wind and the proximity of neighbours and surrounding businesses. Hutchison Quarries had tried to suppress dust with water alone but that was extremely problematic; the material became too wet and sticky to effectively screen clean aggregates. Also, the amount of time wasted in cleaning on a daily basis made operations far less productive.

Ben Hutchison called Polo Citrus Australia, which is one of Australia’s premier dust suppression specialist companies, for solutions to reduce the dust generated from the mobile crushing plant.

Polo Citrus Australia’s business development manager Adam Gelly had discussions with Ben and came up with the solution of using the Polo Citrus foam suppression system, designed for mobile plants with a capacity of up to 300 tonnes per hour and in multiple stages and configurations.

After the initial quote and acceptance, Polo Citrus Australia was set to install the foam suppression system to Hutchison’s mobile plant. The installation date was agreed and Polo Citrus Australia went on to purpose-build and design the system specifically for Hutchison Quarries’ Glen Innes site.

After the initial paperwork and inductions, the Polo Citrus Australia staff installed the system on-site, with minimal downtime to the plant. It is common for a turnkey application and commissioning to take between six and eight hours.

The set-up for this mobile plant involved one injection point at the primary jaw crusher and another injection point at the secondary cone crusher. These application points would then suppress dust further on in the train through to the stackers.

Post-installation, the results were very impressive for this plant and Ben was impressed that there was no spillage from the rollers and belts when using the foam suppression system because when water alone was used, the plant was a real mess.

FIXED PLANT INSTALLATION

After a couple of weeks had passed, Ben once again contacted Polo Citrus Australia. He explained that he wanted to install the foam suppression system in the fixed plant at Warwick, as it was also having serious dust issues.

Hutchison workers had tried suppressing dust from the fixed plant with water alone but it caused more problems than it was worth. The foam suppression system, which operates with a very dry foam, was ideal for this situation. The system was so successful on the mobile plant, Ben said, that he wanted to duplicate its success on the fixed plant as soon as possible.

Again, Polo Citrus Australia responded with another foam suppression system installation within a matter of weeks.

This was a fixed plant installation with different challenges from the mobile plant. Therefore, Polo Citrus Australia personnel installed the foam suppression system to the plant in a different manner. The injection points were different, with the first point being in the secondary crusher and the second in the tertiary crusher.

The plant was quite spread out, so this type of application method ensured an excellent outcome to minimise dust emissions across the site.

After some final adjustments, the system was up and operating and stopping dust emissions from this plant through the secondaries to the stackers. Hutchison Quarries was happy with the results of the foam suppression system and the service that Polo Citrus Australia had provided.

The Polo Citrus Australia foam suppression system is an extremely flexible system. Multiple power options and configurations are available for installation with the turnkey program. The systems are extremely user-friendly – you pretty much just switch them on and off! Producers want a dust suppression system that is not complicated. Polo Citrus Australia delivers a simple “plug and play” system, and there is no need for staff to regulate and adjust settings.

Some months later, it was time to service the systems. Polo Citrus Australia has a maintenance program in place for all foam suppression systems. The first service is free of change.

As the service was completed, Ben Hutchison said: “I was very happy with the results that were achieved from the Polo Citrus dust suppression system. The mobile plant was easy to install and the results were great and that is why we went with the same system for our fixed plant. The guys were easy to work with as well.”
